This is the Great Deadline Debate: Part III as Burga and I have gone back and forth on a few trades. Here are some more of the deals as a couple small ones have been passed as well as a potential blockbuster.
The Boston Red Sox send 3B Will Middlebrooks, INF Jose Iglesias, and SP Prospect Anthony Ranaudo to the New York Mets for 3B David Wright and RP David Aardsma
At first glance, many people probably think the Mets would be crazy to trade one of their only crowd hauling players, but it's a deal they should make in order to build around a Harvey, Wheeler and Syndergaard future rotation. The deal is great for the Sox because they fill the void at 3rd with a power Right Hander like Wright who is not only a perennial allstar and seasoned veteran, but he brings a real 3-hitter presence to their lineup. This is the quiet trade that NEEDS to happen. With Wright protecting Pedroia and being protected by Ortiz he could put up monster numbers and Aardsma beefs up a depleted Boston Bullpen. Will Middlebrooks is not ready yet and Xander Bogaerts is the future Boston SS so Iglesias is dispensable. Ranaudo is tough to part with, but to get a cornerstone player like Wright, it wasn't too hard to let him go.
The New York Yankees send SP Huroki Kuroda to the Nationals for SP Prospect Matt Purke
The Yankees should make another deal like this. Kuroda is having a lights out season for a team that is less than spectacular. They should sell him while he is hot and to bring in any kind of future prospect would be great for the organization. Matt Purke was a lights out starter for the Horned Frogs of TCU, but his game hasn't translated so well to the pro level quite yet. He may be a work in progress, but the Yankees need to do whatever they can to build their farm system to either bring them up on their own later, or trade them for stars down the road. Regardless of what they plan on doing with them, they need to start selling their pieces.
The Chicago White Sox send INF Gordon Beckham and OF Alex Rios to the Braves for OF BJ Upton and SP Prospect JR Graham
I like this trade for the White Sox for a number of reasons. They get to deal away their high price contract outfielder for an underperforming high priced outfielder in BJ Upton which I think could end up working out in their favor. Upton has struggled, but it has been magnified by playing on a good team with his brother now and I think he is just in a funk that could be cured by a less stressful environment. He is still relatively young and could be useful down the road. Pitcher JR Graham is one of the Braves top pitching prospects who they can afford to part with because of their talented system. Gordon Beckham is a little harder to part with as the Sox drafted him in the first round a number of years ago, but he has not panned out to be the player they once thought, but with his recent hot streak, the time is ripe to try to sell him high.
Kansas City Royals send Greg Holland to the Los Angeles Dodgers for INF Skip Schumaker and SP Prospect Chris Reed
With the Royals being in limbo right now they need to make a deal that shows their fans they are trying to compete this season, but at the same time prepares them for the future, because their young players are all starting to emerge in the show and there are more on the way. Holland has been a pleasant surprise as a closer, but as everyone knows, unless you're name is Mo, you are easily replaced as a closer. Skip Schumaker is a solid utility player that could bring some veteran leadership and playoff experience to an otherwise young and unproven locker room. Chris Reed is one of the Dodgers top prospects so getting him in this deal is what made it a no-brainer. Reed and Zimmer will both be coming up shortly to bolster a rotation that includes Big Game James Shields, while Moustakas and Hosmer are starting to come into their own in the big leagues. This is the kind of trade that can help a competitive team this season, while improving a competitive team for years to come.
Los Angeles Angels send OF Peter Bourjos, 1B Prospect CJ Cron, and OF Prospect Randel Grichuk to the San Diego Padres for OF Carlos Quentin and SP Edinson Volquez
With Albert Pujols potentially landing himself on the DL for the remainder of the season and SP Joe Blanton getting demoted from the rotation the Angels need a little bit of help to keep themselves close to the Mariners and the Athletics. Mark Trumbo will now take over the 1B duties, which leaves a hole in right field that can easily be filled by veteran RH bat Carlos Quentin. Volquez will join a rotation that has struggled of late and could give them a chance to compete for a wild card slot. The Angels have been a difficult team to watch this season, and parting with Cron is easy because they already have Pujols and Trumbo filling the 1B spot for years to come. The Angels need to pray they turn their season around soon, or you could see a firesale in the near future.
