Fantasy Hockey Free Agent Frenzy

What a start to the season it's been! Fantasy seasons are neither won nor lost in October, but those quickest to the waiver wire often reap the benefits. Some of these hot starts are just a lucky streak that will quickly fade, while others are the mark of a true breakout season for players that will carry you to a championship.

We're now two weeks or so into the season and it's time to check out which players are worth a look in your leagues. Take a look at your free agent list and see if these guys are available. If so, it's not too early to start making some GM decisions.

Lars Eller, MTL
He's already picked up 5 goals and 2 assists in 5 games, putting him among league leaders. Finally, the Halak trade seems to be really paying off for the Habs. He's super talented, so he's a good candidate to have a strong year on Montreal's top line.

Sean Monahan, CGY
This rookie has been the best player on the Flames, posting 4 goals and 2 assists already. The 6th overall selection in this year's draft looks like a bright spot on this subpar roster. Be wary, though, for he could see a demotion before the 9 game deadline approaches.

Mason Raymond, TOR
This speedy winger has already scored 3 goals and 4 assists and has turned out to be a great signing for Toronto. He's unlikely to keep up the pace, but it's worth riding out while he's producing if you need help at LW.

Michael Grabner, NYI
Who wouldn't produce on a line with Tavares and Moulson? He's already got 2 goals and 5 assists and is a surprising +5 on the Islanders. Call it a hunch but I think he's in line for a great season on the island. Great option at the thin RW.

Nathan Mackinnon, COL
He's a major part of this new-look Colorado franchise under Patrick Roy and they've yet to lose as I'm writing this. The rookie phenom has thrived on a line with Parenteau and McGinn. Both of them are worth looking at as well, by the way.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic, SJS
Not the most exciting pickup but the Sharks are red-hot right now and he's been a contributor across the board, sporting 5 points, +8 and a PPP. You could do worse as your 4/5th defenseman right now.

Justin Faulk, CAR
Should have been picked up already but just in case, go check. He's got 4 assists and a great 14 shots on his resume to far this season. With Pitkanen out, this young blue-liner will be the go-to guy this season for the Canes.

Jonathon Bernier, TOR
Another guy that should have been picked up already. He's been arguably the best goalie so far this season and with Reimer breathing down his neck, he's unlikely to let up.

Josh Harding, MIN
With Backstrom dealing with injuries, Harding has taken the reins and things look good in Minnesota. He's 3-1 with a 1.06 GAA and a .948 SV%. Even when Backstrom comes back, there's a good chance Harding can earn the majority of the starts. Keep an eye on this.

Fantasy Hockey Question of the Week

I got a trade offer and I'm wondering if I should accept. I was offered Jeff Skinner and Jason Garrison for Claude Giroux. Is this a fair offer and should I take it? Thanks, Ben.

Well Ben, it's certainly an interesting offer but politely decline. Skinner's a great talent and I actually really like Garrison as an underrated fantasy defenseman (24 goals the last 2 years as a d-man). However, Giroux was likely your second round pick and shouldn't be given up on this easily. He has as much raw talent as anyone in hockey and though he has started slow (0 goals, 2 assists) he will certainly turn it around. Ask yourself this: when it's crunch time in February and March, which side would you rather have on your roster?

That's all for now. Keep reading and keep sending in those questions!
